Application of noble gas signatures in monitoring schemes for offshore CO₂ storage (ICO₂P)

The ICO₂P project aims to develop a method to monitor CO₂ storage reservoirs; by means of recording and tracking noble gas signatures as they vary in time and space due to isotopic fractionation processes.

This approach will allow for source-specific identification of fluids; differentiating injected (anthropogenic) CO2 from natural methanogenic and biogenic CO₂ rich gases. Measurements are conducted at industrial scale sized sites e.g. TCM and Melkøya (Snøhvit). The sampling at TCM allows to take data right before and after the Capture process, an important step during the full-scale CCS value chain. Specifically, the influence of the capturing process on the noble gases is investigated.
